Our mission statement, “Changing the Future One Voice at a Time," reflects our goal to train children to sing beautifully according to the highest standards, to integrate musical literacy and performance practice, and to return the gift of song to our community.
We foster the personal and social growth of our members and promote their sense of self-esteem, self-discipline, accomplishment, and pride. The youth that participate in the choirs discover new friendships and build their musical resumes, preparing them for future opportunities.
Any Leelanau County youth who wishes to sing is eligible to join. Members are chosen by private audition with performances occurring in the winter and spring. Leelanau Children’s Choir members are 8 years old through 8th grade. Leelanau Youth Ensemble members are in 9th through 12th grade.
In 2007, The LCC/LYE Board of Directors established a scholarship fund for Leelanau County Youth that exhibit commitment, enthusiasm, and love of music. One or more seniors will receive scholarships each spring. To be considered for the scholarship, the applicant must be a current member of the Leelanau Youth Ensemble and a performing participant for both sessions of the senior year. Applicants are required to express their interest in being considered for the scholarship by the first rehearsal of May. The scholarship will be awarded annually.
As of 2014, the Scholarship is now funded by Alumni support, and has been renamed after longtime accompanist Diantha Naftali. We are so grateful for the wonderful support and dedication every choir member felt from "Grandma Di."
The Leelanau Children’s Choir and Leelanau Youth Ensemble are a 501(c)3 organization that is supported by monetary donations from our community. Donations can be made to the general fund or to the Board of Directors Senior Scholarship Fund. Underwriters are always needed and will be featured in our concert program.
